3NT hugely tempting and I think I'd go for this with Axx in spades, but with Ax only I'm slightly reluctant.
So, I'll Pass (there's a surprise).

Hi Gary, I will give more details of this hand later on. H & I discussed the merits of opening this hand 1NT in view of the 4-4 shape in the minors. What are your views on this?

You mean as a 12-14 NT opener? If so, I can understand wanting to pre-empt the minors, but you do have a solid 15 count.
It's swings and roundabouts. Opposite a passed hand, the odds of game are slim so I'm not too worried there.
However, you will be a red rag to a bull and the oppo are likely to come in over your 1NT. So now, everybody is in the dark. You might have a 9 card minor fit and end up having to defend against a 5-2 (or 5-3) major fit that comes in at the 2-level. Equally, the oppo might be a level too high in a hand where you can't make anything.
So if you want to create a swing hand or your playing against fairly weak opposition, I'd say 1NT is fine. Otherwise I think you should just play down the line.
Good question.
Pass. Pre-empts work! With a meagre S stopper, I don't fancy our prospects of running 9 tricks opposite a passed hand and so will play for +300/500. I would be more likely to bid 3N opposite an unpassed hand.
BTW, I see no reason to downgrade this hand (assuming your 1NT opening is 12-14).

I bid 4D and H 'corrected' to 5C which sailed two off.
The problem lay with H's neg X as seen in the problem directly above this one on the page.

3NT happens to be the winning action, but I don't see how I can bid it with any great confidence here! 3S (by them, doubled or undoubled) also makes incidentally!
