W Midlands Duplicate 29.7.08

by Znethru @ 30. 07. 08 - 22:55:15

You deal at love all playing as a visitor with a partner who is very sensible indeed and has 530 greens to his name! You are on 60% (after 18 boards out of 26) in a field of 24.

4S. 6 loser hand.

Can you explain how the losing trick count works on this one? I usually value hands as a good, average, bad or terrific 12-count etc.

I'm assuming you can count losers.

In Brief - a normal opening bid would be 7 losers and 2x7 loser hands (14 losers) make 10 tricks.

Therefore, responses to opener can be viewed as showing losers - 1major-2major=9 losers, 1major-3major=8 losers, 1major-4major(DGR)=7 losers.

Responder shows 8 but opener is strong for his opener with 6 not 7. 6 plus 8=14, therefore 10 tricks.

QED!

Yes, OK - interesting. I have a slightly different approach on this hand but can see how the LTC works here.

Marginal and no really sttrong views on this. Nice honour concentration in my two suits but 5422 is a sterile shape. I'd pass at pairs and bid 4 at teams.

This was my exact view, but most of the room were bidding the game in a fairly average club atmosphere!

6 loser hand and 2 very chunky suits. Would bit 4S every time.

I will leave this open for a few more days as we may have some new readers around!

Yes, one needs to upgrade this hand quite a bit and find the game call.

You only have 12 HCP but with the fit, there are certain 'add-ons'!

Good Quality Trump Suit.
Side suit of 5 cards +1 point
2 doubletons +1 1/2 points (approx!)
All honour cards well placed.
10-9-9 pips are worth another 3/4s or so!

Your hand has increased to 15 1/4 on this system of reckoning!

For the record, game is cold and there are even chances for 11 tricks.
